KYIV, July 6 (TNF): US President Donald Trump hinted at fresh sanctions on Russia after Moscow launched its largest drone and missile assault on Ukraine in the three-year war. Trump said on Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin “just wants to keep killing people” and that this was “no good.”
Trump described his call with Putin as “very unhappy.” He said they spoke “a lot” about possible sanctions. “He understands that it may be coming,” Trump added. The assault followed their call, which ended without progress.
Russia’s attack sparked air raid sirens across Ukraine and forced residents into shelters. In Kyiv, drones buzzed overhead and explosions shook the city through the night as air defences worked to repel the barrage.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke with Trump. “We discussed air defence opportunities and agreed to work together to strengthen protection of our skies,” Zelensky posted on social media.
Residents said the assault felt different. “Nothing like this had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions,” said Tymur, a Kyiv resident familiar with previous attacks.
The Kremlin insisted it preferred political and diplomatic solutions but would continue military operations as needed. “As long as that is not possible, we are continuing the special operation,” said spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The attack damaged Poland’s embassy in Kyiv, though staff were unharmed. Emergency services said at least 26 people were wounded in Kyiv. One person was rescued from rubble.
Russian strikes also hit parts of eastern Ukraine. Regional governor Sergiy Lysak said at least three people were injured in those attacks. Zelensky urged the US to step up pressure on Moscow as Russia reported fresh territorial gains, including a village in Donetsk.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired 539 drones and 11 missiles in what it called the largest single attack since the invasion began.
