DUBAI, June 28 (TNF): Acclaimed Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao will play Sourav Ganguly in the much-anticipated biopic of the former Indian cricket captain as confirmed by NDTV after Ganguly himself shared it.
Rao expressed both excitement and nervousness. “Since Dada has already revealed it, I can officially say that I will be portraying him on screen. I’m nervous, of course—it’s a massive responsibility—but I’m also looking forward to it,” he told NDTV. Rao said his wife, actor Patralekhaa, has made learning Bengali easier for him as she is a native speaker.
Sourav Ganguly endorsed Rao for the role. “I believe the right actor has been chosen. Rajkummar is perfect for it, and I’ll be there to help him with anything he needs,” Ganguly said. He added that filming will start in January 2026. The movie is set for release in December the same year.
Ganguly is closely involved in shaping the film. The story will follow his rise from Kolkata’s cricket fields to becoming one of India’s most celebrated captains.
Rao is familiar with portraying real-life figures. He played human rights lawyer Shahid Azmi in Shahid, terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in Omerta, and entrepreneur Srikanth Bolla in Srikanth.
