India crush England by 336 runs as Deep takes 10 wickets

BIRMINGHAM, July 7 (TNF): Akash Deep took 10 wickets in a match for the first time as India crushed England by 336 runs at Edgbaston on Sunday. The win leveled the five-match series at 1-1.

Deep was playing in place of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested. The 28-year-old took 6-99 in the second innings. England, set 608 to win, folded for 271 on the final day. Deep’s match figures of 10-147 are the best of his eight-Test career.

Jamie Smith was England’s only batter to pass fifty in the second innings. The keeper made 88, after scoring 184 not out in the first innings.

The victory gave India their first Test win at Edgbaston in nine attempts. They had lost seven and drawn one before.

It was a special match for Shubman Gill. The India captain became the first player to score 250 and 150 in the same Test. He hit 269 in the first innings and 161 off 162 balls in the second. Gill has now made three centuries in his first two Tests as skipper.

England faced history when they resumed at 72-3 after rain delayed play for over 90 minutes. No team has chased more than 418 to win in a Test.

Deep struck early. Ollie Pope, on 24 overnight, dragged a rising ball onto his stumps. Ben Stokes came in, under pressure after his golden duck in the first innings. He avoided a king pair with a legside flick.

But England soon slipped to 83-5. Deep trapped Harry Brook lbw for 23. Brook reviewed, but the decision stood. The large India crowd cheered loudly.

Smith and Stokes shared 70 for the sixth wicket. But just before lunch, Washington Sundar trapped Stokes lbw for 33. It was the first wicket by an India bowler other than Deep or Siraj.

England went to lunch at 153-6. After the break, Smith smashed Sundar for 17 in an over, with two big sixes. But Woakes fell for 7, pulling Prasidh Krishna to midwicket.

Smith pulled Deep for two sixes in a row to reach 88. But on the next ball, he mistimed a slower one and was caught by Sundar at deep backward square.

England, at 226-8, were doomed. Josh Tongue fell to a superb catch by Siraj at midwicket. Brydon Carse holed out to Gill at cover off Deep to end the match.

Gill was named player of the match.
