ISLAMABAD, June 26 (TNF): The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) is actively monitoring a series of minor earthquakes recently recorded in Karachi and its surrounding areas, with officials emphasizing that the tremors are part of normal tectonic behavior in seismically active regions.
According to data reported by ARY News, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that the NSMC has registered 57 low-magnitude tremors in Karachi since June 1, 2025, ranging between 1.5 and 3.8 on the Richter scale.
The cause of this activity has been attributed to the activation of the Landhi Fault Line, which, according to seismic experts, is undergoing a natural release of tectonic stress. “This unusually high frequency reflects a normal geological process within the region’s fault system,” said a PMD spokesperson.
Experts clarified that the tremors, most of which occurred at shallow depths (up to 70km), are not unusual for a city like Karachi, which lies near the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. They added that small-scale stress accumulation and subsequent release is a common feature in such geologically active areas.
“These minor jolts are part of the Earth’s natural behavior and do not suggest the onset of a larger seismic event,” experts reiterated. They further explained that local factors such as soft soil conditions, land reclamation, and unregulated groundwater extraction may influence how these quakes are felt on the surface.
At this stage, based on the seismic patterns and available data, no immediate threat of a major earthquake has been identified. The PMD assured that its teams are continuously analyzing real-time seismic data to detect any abnormal shifts or trends.
“The public is strongly advised to remain calm. These tremors, while noticeable, are not a cause for alarm,” the PMD stated, urging residents to stay informed through official channels and avoid panic.
