Pakistan Hockey Federation appeals for government support to overcome financial hurdles

ISLAMABAD, June 27 (TNF): The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has called for urgent government assistance to help the national sport navigate mounting financial and operational challenges. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid and Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) Director General Yasser Pirzada shared their concerns during a press conference on Thursday.

Rana Mujahid highlighted the substantial costs associated with participating in international events such as the FIH Pro League, stressing that these expenses are difficult to cover without state backing. “We hope Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will support us in the current situation,” he said, adding that the PHF has also sought assistance from Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir.

Drawing comparisons with neighbouring India, Mujahid noted that the Indian hockey federation benefits from an annual grant of Rs3 billion, while Pakistan’s hockey budget is significantly smaller. “Our grants are public knowledge, and we are doing our best within limited resources,” he remarked.

Despite these constraints, Mujahid expressed satisfaction with the national team’s showing at the FIH Nations Hockey Cup and confirmed Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming Junior Asia Hockey Cup, underlining the importance of giving young players international exposure. He further stated that head coach Tahir Zaman would soon present a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing the senior team’s performance.

Reaffirming the PHF’s commitment to align with government and PSB policies, Mujahid addressed concerns about possible sanctions from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). He cautioned that withdrawing from tournaments after confirming participation could invite bans. To avoid this, the PHF has been in communication with FIH President Tayyab Ikram, seeking additional time to assess the situation. “We have explained our challenges to the FIH and are seeking flexibility,” Mujahid said.

The press conference underscored the federation’s determination to sustain Pakistan’s presence in global hockey despite financial pressures, with hopes pinned on timely government support and strategic planning to revive the country’s hockey legacy.
