ISLAMABAD, June 27 (TNF): As the world marked the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on Thursday, Pakistan reaffirmed its solidarity with victims of torture across the globe and reiterated its commitment to eradicating torture and upholding human dignity.
In a statement, the Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson emphasised that Islam upholds the sanctity and dignity of every human being and that any act of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment is contrary to the values of justice, mercy, and compassion that form the foundation of Islamic teachings. The spokesperson stated that Pakistan, guided by these values and its international obligations, remains committed to eliminating torture and strengthening protections for all individuals.
He noted that Pakistan continues to advance legal reforms, institutional safeguards, and oversight mechanisms to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law, alongside measures to provide medical, legal, and psychosocial support to victims. The spokesperson expressed grave concern over the systematic use of torture as a tool of oppression in territories under foreign occupation, highlighting that people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continue to endure the worst forms of torture and degrading treatment by occupying powers in an attempt to suppress their right to self-determination.
He called on the international community to condemn these crimes, hold the occupying powers accountable, and help end the suffering of the victims of torture and oppression.
