HELSINKI, June 29 (TNF): Finland’s Ministry of Defence signed a Letter of Intent with ICEYE. The deal will help Finland buy Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. This move aims to build Finland’s own space surveillance system.
The agreement defines technical details and delivery plans. It will boost Finland’s defence and intelligence capabilities. The deal gives Finland direct access to ICEYE’s satellite data. This data will improve real-time awareness for leaders and security forces.
Finland wants to modernize its defence using advanced space technology. ICEYE’s Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer Pekka Laurila welcomed the partnership. “We are proud to help safeguard Finland’s security. Space data gives leaders the tools to make smart decisions,” he said. He noted that the deal puts Finland at the front of space-based defence. It will also support NATO allies through shared technology.
Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen called the deal a major step. “Space plays a bigger role in defence today. This agreement helps us build our own satellite surveillance. It strengthens our intelligence and supports our defence industry. It also deepens cooperation with allies,” he said.
The deal will speed up Finland’s plans for space strategy and new intelligence tools. ICEYE operates the largest SAR satellite fleet in the world. Its satellites deliver 25 cm resolution images in any weather or light. ICEYE has launched 54 SAR satellites so far for its missions and clients.
