WASHINGTON, July 6 (TNF): Elon Musk, once a close ally of US President Donald Trump, announced on Saturday that he has launched a new political party. He said the party will challenge what he called the country’s “one-party system.”
Musk, the world’s richest person, was Trump’s biggest donor in the 2024 election. The two fell out after Musk led the Republican effort to cut spending and reduce federal jobs as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk opposed Trump’s major domestic spending plan. He warned that it would push US debt to dangerous levels. He also pledged to fight lawmakers who supported the plan.
Musk has now formed the America Party to advance his goals. He announced it in a post on X, the platform he owns. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
He pointed to a poll he posted on Friday, US Independence Day. The survey asked if people wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” More than 1.2 million users responded.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote. He also shared a meme of a two-headed snake with the words “End the Uniparty.”
