ISLAMABAD, June 25 (TNF): The federal capital and its surrounding areas experienced rainfall on Wednesday morning, marking the onset of the monsoon season in Pakistan.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the monsoon rains have officially begun in Punjab, with the current wet spell expected to continue until July 1. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the beginning of monsoon rains across the country starting June 25 (today).
The Met Office has issued a warning for potential flooding in local streams and drainage systems in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, northeastern Punjab, and Kashmir due to anticipated heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 26 and July 1. Urban flooding is particularly likely in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar during this period.
On Wednesday, heavy showers were reported in several areas, with Islamabad’s Bokra receiving the highest recorded rainfall at 68mm, followed by 56mm in Shamsabad, Rawalpindi.
While Punjab, KP, and Kashmir are expected to receive significant rainfall today, other parts of the country will continue to experience hot and humid weather. By Thursday, monsoon activity is likely to extend to Sindh and parts of northeastern and southern Balochistan.
In Sindh, hot and humid conditions will persist through the day, with chances of rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms expected in the evening or night in districts such as Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Mirpurkhas. The PMD further forecasts rainfall on Thursday in areas including Dadu, Naushero Feroze, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, and Karachi.
The Met Office has also cautioned about possible urban flooding in Hyderabad and Karachi between June 26 and 28, due to heavy rainfall.
