Naqvi Urges Ulema to Promote Peace in Muharram

ISLAMABAD, July 3 (TNF): Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Thursday underscored the vital role of religious scholars in maintaining peace during Muharram. He highlighted the government’s robust security measures ahead of Ashura on Sunday, including army deployment, intensified intelligence operations, and action against sectarian content and hate speech.

Naqvi, in a meeting with scholars from various sects in Islamabad, expressed deep appreciation for their efforts. “We can never thank the ulema enough for their contribution in ensuring harmony during Muharram,” he said. Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad also attended the meeting.

The interior minister emphasized that religious scholars’ collaboration with law enforcement agencies is crucial for resolving disputes and maintaining order. He invited Maulana Azad and other scholars to lead collective Zuhr prayers at Faisal Mosque on August 14, symbolizing national unity on Independence Day.

Chaudhry credited ulema for their role in countering terrorism and sectarianism. Maulana Azad reaffirmed their collective commitment to safeguarding the country’s security.

Islamabad police have pinpointed 13 sensitive spots, banned entry of 17 firebrand clerics, and tightened surveillance. Punjab has enforced Section 144 province-wide until Sunday, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa imposed it selectively in high-risk districts. Karachi has stationed over 20,000 personnel for Ashura security.

Naqvi urged ulema to engage counterparts in KP to help curb terrorism, stressing that the menace persists only with local support. His remarks followed a recent attack in Bajaur that martyred an assistant commissioner and four others, injuring 17 including police.

He also praised Pakistan’s role in facilitating the Iran-Israel ceasefire, highlighting the armed forces’ efforts in earning global recognition, including Iran’s appreciation for Pakistan’s contribution to peace.
