ABUJA, June 28 (TNF): In a significant step towards modernising its identity infrastructure, Niger has entered into two landmark agreements with Libya’s Al Itissan Al-Jadeed to upgrade the country’s national ID and biometric passport systems.
At a signing ceremony in Niamey, Niger’s Minister of State for the Interior, Mohamed Toumba, formalised the partnership by inking two memoranda of understanding with Wissal Samtali, the director of Al Itissan Al-Jadeed.
A statement from Niger’s Interior Ministry, obtained by APA on Saturday, detailed that the first MoU sets up a public-private partnership for the funding, development, and maintenance of a polycarbonate biometric e-passport system. This upgraded system will feature embedded electronic chips and include digital archiving of identity records to improve civil documentation and strengthen data protection.
The second agreement focuses on rolling out a more advanced and secure biometric national ID card for citizens, aiming to enhance the country’s identification processes and overall security framework.
